Senior Media Officer

Job Overview

The BMA is often front and centre of the news agenda - leading on health policy issues and the work of the UK’s doctors. This is a senior role within the BMA’s 8-strong Media and News Relations team, sitting in the wider Communications and Policy directorate. It’s an exciting and challenging role working in an extremely busy news environment across a reactive and proactive news agenda.

You’ll work closely with policy and public affairs colleagues as well as senior elected members of the BMA, representing the Association and its members across a broad range of media. This role has specific responsibility for engaging with regional media to proactively promote the work of the BMA as a professional association and doctors’ trade union.

For this role, we’re looking for someone with not only proven expertise to draft top level press releases and briefings, and to develop proactive media plans, but who also has good political acumen, with demonstrable understanding of the current health policy landscape. Previous experience in a large membership organisation or working in an organisation with multiple stakeholders would be a distinct advantage.

You will also come with a wealth of good and relevant media contacts and be educated to degree level – preferably with additional qualifications in communications and public relations.

First class news judgement, enthusiasm and the ability to work, often under pressure, with policy and research material and know what makes a story newsworthy, as well the ability to keep a level head during a crisis and deal with the media, are also a must.

Why work for us?

As a BMA employee, you`ll receive:

  • Generous annual leave provision, plus 1 company day and public holidays
  • Double matching pension contributions up to 12% of salary
  • Season ticket loan (up to £10,000) after completion of probationary period
  • Additional flexible benefits.

You may be working remotely initially, but we`ll provide all the support you need. If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, please apply through our website. For any queries please email recruitment@bma.org.uk
