We are seeking an exceptional Group Chief Executive to lead the organisation through an exciting time of transition. You will work with the senior leadership team, chief officers, Council and Board, providing excellent commercial and financial stewardship, ensuring that the BMA has a clear vision and strategy. You will ensure strong operational and strategic business plans that will deliver high quality services to retain and grow our membership.

The BMA is the trade union and professional association for over 160,000 UK doctors and medical students. Our growing membership numbers demonstrate no-one better understands the day-to-day challenges and demands facing the profession and the healthcare system in which they work. The BMA is formally recognised for collective bargaining purposes across the four UK nations and supports and represents members with individual employers. We are the leading voice in the national debate on the future of healthcare in the UK. We support doctors at all stages of their career so that they can provide the best care for patients. We work in a challenging political context and a rapidly changing healthcare policy environment. This has all been made more complex by the global Covid pandemic.

Drawing on your outstanding communication and influencing skills, and powerful credentials in motivating teams, you will develop and lead a cohesive and capable senior team to deliver business change and maintain relationships across the breadth of our stakeholder community.

We are seeking a special kind of leader – somebody who shares our values and our vision for a profession of valued doctors delivering the highest quality health services. Whether you are a serving Chief Executive or this is a career step, you will have a demonstrable track record operating at executive board level in a complex organisation, ideally in the wider health and/or membership services sector.

You will have the ability to build high level strategic relationships and develop and build confidence with a large elected membership body, as well as bringing commercial acumen to enable the BMA and BMJ Boards to maximise opportunities for growth. You will be confident under scrutiny, resilient under pressure and impress us with your political insight, sound judgment and integrity.
