The Opportunity

The LSL Group has been engaged on an exclusive basis by the British Medical Association (BMA) to recruit a Director of Legal Services, operating from the central London headquarters.

 

We are looking for a qualified practicing solicitor, with excellent stakeholder management and communication skills to lead a team of legal professionals to provide the strategic management of legal advice to the Association and litigation for the BMA to promote the medical and allied sciences, maintain the reputation and interests of the medical profession and the achievement of high-quality healthcare. The Director of Legal Services will also lead the specialist independent law firm – BMA Law Limited.  

 

This is an ideal position for an ambitious individual seeking to join the leading association in its field and contribute their professional and leadership expertise to the performance of the organisation.

 

As Director of Legal Services your responsibilities will include the motivation and leadership of professional grade team members. You will provide broad-ranging legal advice to a diverse range of stakeholders including the Council, Board and Executive Team and Representative Body. You will also lead and advise the BMA on all aspects of legal risk including Reputational, Regulatory, Commercial, Governance and Compliance.

 

Desired Skills and Experience

You will be a practicing solicitor, registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority, with most likely at least 15 years’ PQE. You will have a high level of legal expertise in differing fields of law including employment, public, commercial, litigation, data protection and freedom of information. Knowledge of medical regulatory law and TULRCA would be desirable.

 

You will have gained your experience of leading legal teams within complex organisations such as trades unions, professional associations, regulatory bodies, NHS Trusts or law firms dealing in the medical/health arena or local/central government.

 

Personal characteristics 

A self-starter with gravitas and credibility, you will have excellent communications skills and be able to present and explain complex legal information in a dynamic and accessible way. Diplomatic and authoritative, you will have high levels of emotional intelligence and be able to promote a collegiate and supportive culture. A team player, able to build strong relationships at all levels, your personal integrity, trust and professionalism will be impeccable. You will bring your creativity and judgement to the role, promoting and influencing change and driving high performance. You will be able to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines. Above all you will be a confident and motivational leader who can contribute broadly to the Association.
