Editorials Editor, The BMJ
Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join The BMJ as Editorials editor, working across The BMJ’s editorials (3 days per week) and education (2 days per week) sections. This role is perfect for a medical professional with a passion for clinical writing and editorial work, and an interest in influencing the future of medical journalism. In this role, you will work with The BMJ’s international editorial team to commission and edit content aimed at a global medical audience. This is a full-time position, however, we could consider applications from candidates interested in part-time work (minimum 2 days per week). Please indicate your preferred working hours on your application form.
Responsibilities:
- Select editorial and education topics and authors, set briefs, negotiate requirements and deadlines, edit copy, peer review and guide revision as necessary.
- Liaise with technical editing, print, and production teams to publish a target number of high quality and influential editorials and education articles each week.
- Set the print schedule for editorials and secure a healthy pipeline of content for online and print journals, ensuring enough copy for the weekly print issue.
- Train, advise, and coordinate the output of other editors contributing to the editorials and education sections of the journal
- Commission work from international, multidisciplinary author groups to broaden the relevance of our content to our global audience
- Attend all relevant BMJ meetings and meetings of the wider BMJ journals
- Collaborate with other BMJ teams across the journal including news and journalism, research, opinion, analysis, bmj.com, research integrity, education, collections, print, production, and technical editing.
- Support the research team to commission linked editorials for research papers
- Work with with education specialty advisers to identify topics relevant to a wide international general medical audience to fulfil the section’s commissioning strategy
- Apply The BMJ’s strict competing interests policy for education and clinical editorial content to identify authors free from commercial ties
- Support The BMJ’s patient and public partnership strategy through championing co-production of content with patients and soliciting patient reviews for education articles alongside traditional peer review
- Support and mentor new editors on the team, provide cover for colleagues in their absence
Essential requirements and qualifications
- Medical degree
- Clinical experience
- Editorial experience, including commissioning, editing and handling the peer review of content
- Writing experience
