Finance Director

Job Overview

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK, providing individual and collective representation and speaking for doctors at all stages of their careers.  174,000 practicing UK doctors and medical students are in membership and receive employment advice and protection in the workplace. The BMA also ensures the collective interests of all doctors are defended and promoted.  The BMA is not just the voice of the profession but has responsibility for negotiating pay and other conditions of service at both a national and local level.

As a professional association the BMA campaigns and provides guidance on ethical, scientific and public health issues and on equality and diversity within medicine.  Its influence, its work in these areas and its publications and reports are nationally and internationally respected.  The BMA also provides a range of tools, advice and access to learning and development programmes and courses allowing members to keep up to date with practice-changing developments in support of their continuing professional development.

As BMA Finance Director reporting to the Group Chief Financial Officer, you will provide financial leadership and expertise to deliver the 5-year financial strategy, working with the BMA Board and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) through business partnering.  As a member of the SLT you will provide vision, leadership, coaching and mentoring to the finance team to ensure they are appropriately motivated and equipped to carry out their responsibilities to the required standards and achieve their objectives.

Your remit will include the development and control of the BMA’s annual budget and long-term plan, providing insightful, timely and accurate financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders and forecasting and overseeing the company’s financial and management accounts.  You will ensure compliance with company law, tax and VAT regulations, overseeing audit, payroll and tax functions group-wide.  You will also support the development of commercial skills and business acumen among the BMA leadership and management colleagues.

This is an ideal position for an ambitious individual seeking to join the leading Association in its field and to contribute strategically as well as tactically to the performance of the organisation.

You will be a Qualified Accountant with extensive post-qualification experience gained at senior level within an organisation of similar size and complexity.  Your background may include organisations such as trade unions, membership bodies or local authorities.  You will have gained a strong appreciation of how effective influencing and communication can achieve results across diverse stakeholder groups.

Commercially astute and with excellent interpersonal skills you will have a collaborative approach and a high level of emotional intelligence to be able to deal with multiple stakeholders including members, committees, Board members and external providers. You will be able to think strategically and also to get involved in the detail. You will need to roll up your sleeves regularly.

You will have strategic vision and a desire to innovate and challenge in a changing environment.  A self-starter with gravitas and credibility, you will have excellent leadership, organisational and communication skills.  You will be able to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines.  Above all you will be a confident and motivational leader who can contribute broadly to the Association.
