About the BMA

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK.   It has a prominent and influential position at the very heart of current debate over the future of healthcare provision. The BMA speaks for doctors at all stages of their careers and is a leading voice on a wide range of professional and political issues affecting medicine and health.

Ensuring that the BMA leads debates on the range of public health, healthcare and workforces’ issues is a critical function of the policy directorate; so too is ensuring that our committees and internal structures work effectively and dynamically.

The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) is the only body which represents all GPs in the UK. It deals with all matters affecting NHS GPs, regardless of BMA membership. We are looking to recruit a full time, Head of Committee Secretariat to lead the work of the Committee (GPC UK & England).

This is a 12month fixed-term contract and a hybrid role with a mix of working from home and from BMA House in Central London.

As a Head of Committee you will:

  • Lead and manage a high performing team to ensure the successful delivery of committee outcomes.
  •  Research and draft reports for the committee 
  • Be accountable for the committees budget
  • Oversee support for committee meetings, away days and conferences
  • Ensure the smooth running of meetings providing secretariat support
  • Accountable for the committee's annual workplan
  • Work with members and colleagues across the policy directorate to develop and implement policy as well as providing strategic advice to committees on policy issues within their remit.   

 To be successful as a Head of Committee you'll ideally have:

  • Experience working with and managing committees
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Influencing skills with the ability to resolve conflicts
  • Experience in the development of open and evidence-based policy
  • Team management experience
    • Ability to grasp new concepts quickly
  • Ability to build effective relationships
  • The ability to work flexibly and have the practical aptitude to think quickly and respond to demands in a positive manner
  •  Knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the medical profession is desirable.
