Interim Director of Member Relations

Job Overview

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK. It has a prominent and influential position at the heart of the current debate over the future of healthcare provision, as a recognised union for 160,000 practising UK doctors and medical students.  Individual members receive employment advice and protection in the workplace, while BMA also ensures all doctors' collective interests are defended and promoted.  The BMA also operates its own publishing company through a wholly-owned subsidiary, the BMJ, and delivers specialist legal services through another company, BMA Law. The BMA works in a challenging political context and a dynamic, rapidly changing healthcare environment.

The BMA recently published a new strategy, which puts their members at the heart of everything they do. The Interim Director of Member Relations (MR) role will be critical to the successful implementation of the strategy, given that the majority of its member interactions with the BMA are through the MR directorate.  During 2019 and 2020, the BMA undertook a significant review of the services offered to their members, including member satisfaction.  These reviews resulted in several recommendations for improvements which they have begun to implement.

The BMA seeks an exceptional individual - initially on an interim basis - to lead on the continued improvement of MR services, building on what has worked to date, whilst ensuring its 170 colleagues, as well as a ‘First Point of Contact’ team in our Glasgow call centre, work optimally as one cohesive and supportive team, supporting BMA members.

Suitable candidates will have evidence of:

  • Strategic and operational leadership of an advisory/specialist advisory function or in a demanding customer services role gained at a senior level within a complex service delivery organisation/sector, Membership-based and/or Professional Association and/or Trade Union body;
  • Leadership values and behaviours that support collaborative team working;
  • Able to effectively contribute as a member of the CEOs leadership team;
  • Good awareness and understanding of trends, technology and developments within area of expertise, particularly the challenges and opportunities presented with the health and public sector.
  • Empathy of the medical profession; and the environment and challenge facing doctors.

This is a 12 month, fixed term contract and to apply for this role, please submit a CV and short covering letter demonstrating how you meet the requirements of this role, quoting reference number SDCI6596, to sc@warrenpartners.co.uk. Alternatively, for an informal and confidential discussion, please call our advising consultant, Stephanie Clarke, on: 0845 261 0600
