Reporting to the Head of Media and News Relations, the Media Officer will play a vital role within the incredibly busy news and media department and wider BMA through ensuring that the Association is represented in the media on key aspects of health and NHS policy.

The BMA remains at the forefront of the news agenda, so we are looking for someone with demonstrable experience in managing national and regional media. This role will have specific responsibility for engaging with regional media organisations and working closely with doctors, as regional spokespeople to proactively promote the work of the BMA as a trade union and professional association.

We`re looking for someone with not only the proven expertise to draft top-level press releases and briefings but who also has good political acumen, with a demonstrable understanding of the current policy and political landscape, particularly at a regional level. First-class news judgement, enthusiasm and the ability to interpret information and know what makes a story newsworthy, as well the ability to keep a level head during a crisis and deal with the media, are also a must. Ideally, you’ll have a background in a national membership organisation or from a health-related field.

You will also come with a wealth of good and relevant media contacts and be educated to degree level - preferably with additional qualifications in communications and public relations.

Why work for us?

As a BMA employee, you`ll receive:

  • Generous annual leave provision, plus 1 company day and public holidays
  • Double matching pension contributions up to 12% of salary
  • Season ticket loan (up to £10,000) after completion of probationary period
  • Additional flexible benefits.

You may be working remotely initially, but we`ll provide all the support you need. If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, please apply through our website. For any queries please email recruitment@bma.org.uk
