About the Role

The BMA is looking to recruit a Senior Governance Officer to join the Council Secretariat team. This is an important role supporting the effective operation of the BMA’s corporate governance committees and helping ensure that committee business is well planned, well governed and aligned with the association’s Articles, By-laws, standing orders and strategic priorities.

 

Working closely with committee chairs, members, senior staff and colleagues across the organisation, you will provide high-quality secretariat and governance support to key committees, including the audit and risk committee, finance committee and remuneration committee. You will help ensure meetings run smoothly, decisions are clearly recorded and followed up, and effective information flows are maintained between committees, Council and the Board of Directors.

 

As a Senior Governance Officer, you will:


  • Provide high-quality secretariat support to key governance committees, including preparing agendas, drafting minutes, producing reports and chair briefings, and supporting the smooth running of meetings
  • Support committees to operate within the BMA’s governance framework, including its Articles, by-laws, standing orders and agreed workplans
  • Manage committee action logs, follow up decisions and work with colleagues across the BMA to ensure agreed actions are progressed
  • Contribute to policy and governance development, including researching issues, analysing proposals, preparing recommendations and developing supporting materials
  • Coordinate recruitment, induction and onboarding arrangements for committee lay members, and help maintain strong relationships with committee members and key stakeholders
  • Liaise confidently with colleagues across the organisation, including senior managers, chief officers, finance colleagues and staff supporting other committees

To be successful as a Senior Governance Officer you'll ideally have:

  • A strong background in corporate governance and experience of supporting committees, boards or similar decision-making bodies
  • The ability to work with chairs to develop agendas, prepare high-quality papers, draft accurate minutes and ensure decisions are implemented
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound judgement, personal resilience
  • The ability to build effective relationships with senior colleagues, elected and lay members and external stakeholders.
