Deputy Chief Executive Officer
Job Overview
As the recognised trade union for 160,000 practising UK doctors and medical students, no one better understands the day-to-day challenges facing the healthcare system, the working lives and demands doctors and medical students face, particularly at this difficult moment in time. Since the inception of the NHS the BMA has been formally recognised for collective bargaining purposes and by individual employers at local level. As a professional body we provide a wide range of services for our members, lead the debate on health to engage, inform, and stimulate doctors, researchers, and other health professionals to improve outcomes for patients, speaking for doctors at all stages of their careers. Today, the BMA works in a challenging political context and in a dynamic, rapidly changing healthcare environment that has also had to respond to the unprecedented demands of COVID19.
The Deputy Chief Executive (DECO) appointment is a new role and for the first time brings together the trade union and professional activities of the association under single leadership from national to local level as we strive to join up activities and improve collaboration, to ensure a smooth, effective and high-quality trade union and professional association offering to our paying members. As a member of the senior leadership team and reporting to the Chief Executive, you will work closely with senior leadership team colleagues, the Chief Officers, Council and Board.
Our DCEO will lead cultural change, bringing together a new team of dedicated professionals, ensuring staff inclusion and involvement. The quality of our interactions with our members directly depends on the engagement, motivation and satisfaction of our colleagues here at the BMA and the DCEO will play a vital role in ensuring continued improvement in making the BMA a great place to work.
We are seeking a special kind of leader – somebody who will share our values and our vision for a profession of valued doctors delivering the highest quality health services. We believe that to be successful in the role, you will be a proven change leader, with a relevant senior management track record, probably gained in a trade union environment, or similar, together with acute political sensitivity and judgement.
This role requires a change agent whose success inspiring, leading, and embedding complex organisational change and improvement is underpinned by intellectual rigour and sophisticated relationship skills. These attributes will also support their credibility and influence with the medical profession and our wider external stakeholders.
