Deputy Head of General Practitioners Committee

About the role

We're looking to recruit a a Deputy Head of GP Committees to direct the work of GP committees, as part of our GP Committees secretariat team within the National Negotiations & Representation (NNR) function.

This team is responsible for supporting committees that represent over 45,000 GPs and over 10,000 GP trainees across the UK. As a team we support these committees in delivering on their aims for the benefit of their members and the work of the team can often be diverse and fast-paced.

In this role, with the support of the Head of GP Committees, you will oversee supporting committees and lead on the delivery of a conference. In this role, you will provide strategic advice to committee chairs and executive teams, oversee the progression of committee workstreams, independently lead on discrete projects, and have day-to-day responsibility for the running of committee business.

 

In this role your duties will include:

  • Advising the chairs and other senior committee members about high-profile items of business including work with the Government and NHS England & Improvement
  • Setting and ensuring the successful delivery of committee objectives
  • Researching and drafting briefs and reports for committee members
  • Working with committee members and colleagues across the BMA to develop and implement policy as well as providing strategic advice to committees on issues within their remit.
  • Collaborating and co-ordinating with staff teams across the BMA
  • Line management of team members
  • Oversight of governance and budgetary arrangements, along with elections for committees

  To be successful in the role you'll have:

  • Have demonstrable strategic awareness
  • Have highly adept influencing skills, with experience of handling complex situations requiring tact and discretion
  • Previous experience of managing and motivating a team
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to build strong relationships with counterparts, stakeholders and senior colleagues
  • Excellent writing skills, with experience of drafting high-quality, impactful policy reports and briefings which enable effective decision making
  • Strong organisational skills with a proactive approach to work and problem-solving
  • Experience of project management or having oversight of multiple concurrent workstreams
  • Strong collaboration skills
  •  A proactive approach to work and the ability to think quickly and respond to demands in a positive manner
  • Have the ability to grasp new policy concepts quickly and undertake research and review of policy issues.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the health sector and medical profession, in particular GPs, is desirable.
  • Preferably have experience of working with committees
